Quest 314

The last time, it was summer--June, I think, the end of June or so, because Edmund was gone and I was still trying to sort out the Blue Light and all--and now it's autumn and everyone's come back again. That's how it goes, you know, in seasons. Once in the summer, once in the winter, once in the fall or spring, but not often both. Sometimes it happens on Halloween, even--I remember there was once when everyone came, and that was the silver lining to an awful October, getting to see everyone and...

It's just, one does this enough and one grows to expect...well.

Edmund, are you here? Please, I hope you are--and Blue, if you are too, I'd...and I know Alexander was here last, and sometimes Mother comes, and Daddy, and...

Um.

That is, it's very nice to see all of you visiting today, both the people that have come back and the ones that are here for the first time. Just as before, we'll have the Blue Light open late tonight and tomorrow, for anyone to come and sit and have something to eat and visit awhile, and that's where I'll be should anyone come looking for me.

And if you're here, too, you awful dog, you keep away from me--you haven't gotten me yet, and I won't let you, I won't--

[OOC: As per usual, she's canonically from just after the end of Perils of Rosella, and with some very disjointed and vague knowledge of Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder. Not that that really means anything to anyone, but. If something comes up that I don't want her to know, I'll just have her forget it, so have a party--anything goes! HIT HER WITH EVERYTHING YOU'VE GOT. Troll, threadjack, have a ball!

And of course, because RL has shown an unfortunate trend of eating me alive lately, I am totally okay with backdating. ♥]

Quest 313

[Accidental Voice Post]

[The audio opens here with a clatter, as a Network device accidentally knocked askew goes tumbling to the ground and switches on by mistake--]

Oh, that horrible--it's ticking!

[There's an aghast pause, and then a shuffling flurry of movement, and then--]

Oh, no, no, no, it can't be, it--no, no, it can't--

[And with a little more rustling...]

--a machine!

[And it's quite impressive, really, how much horror and disgust and loathing she manages to compress into that one single word, and in the silence that follows before the feed switches off, the very faint sound of clockwork gears clicking can be heard.]

[OOC: Posting kind of early because I have an exam on Monday (ugh) but I didn't want to risk missing this curse because machines. TL;DR, Rosella (and everyone from Daventry) canonically loathes machinery, specifically of the clockwork-and-gears variety, so being turned into a clockwork princess today is...well. Subtle body horror at its finest? WELCOME TO OCTOBER IN THE CITY, I suppose. o/]

So I've been paired up this round with, uh, with Doctor Emmett Brown. "Doc". We all just call him "Doc" by now.

Quest 311

[Open Action]

[Like many other citizens today, Rosella's been struck with the urge to fly, but thankfully, rather than taking to the rooftops, she's chosen a slightly...alternative method of attempting to spread her wings. Which is why she's currently zipping around the City proper on her Rollerblades, skirts caught up and braids streaming behind her as she enjoys the feeling of wind in her face.

At the moment, she's in the vicinity of the Library, making wide circles to pick up speed, and then at last she veers off, hurtling up the ramp, speeding along the entry--

--and finally, jumping off the steps in a flying leap.

She lands, wobbles, coasts--and then she's off again, laughing, looking for something else to give her that exquisite feeling of flying.]

[OOC: Video pictured is for reference only; there's no way she's actually jumping two flights of steps and surviving. She will, however, be leaping off stairs and porches all over the City today, so feel free to encounter her anywhere!]

Quest 310

Mm. It's August 2nd again, isn't it.

Thinking back on it, I remember I first started this journal because we have a certain tradition in my family, that every time one of us goes on a grand adventure, the first thing we do once we've gotten back and hugged everyone and all that is to sit right down with the court chronicler and tell the whole story as clearly as we can remember it, so he can take it down and save it with the other tales of adventure in our library. And everything was so new to me then, and there was so much to see, that I thought I'd better write it all down as I went along, or I'd never be able to remember it all once I finally did get home. Looking back on it now, I'm rather glad I did; back then, I had no idea I'd be away for years, instead of weeks or even months. And I'm sure I wouldn't remember nearly so much of it as I ought to if I didn't have this journal to remind me.

But there is a story I'll never forget, and it's the one I tell every year on August 2nd: the one about the princess with the six brothers that were turned into swans, and how she spent six years in silence sewing shirts for them out of thistles, because the only way to break the curse was to go the whole time without ever smiling or laughing as she worked to make the shirts that would change them back. And every year I think of that princess, and how long of a time six years really is--it's only a few lines in a story, but living it out is something very different entirely, isn't it? I certainly don't think I could've managed it myself.

After all, just four years already seems like a terribly long time, and that's with being able to smile and laugh and speak with my friends every day.

I do wonder sometimes, on August 2nd, what I'll do if I manage to run out six years, just the same as that princess with her swan brothers did. I'm more than halfway to it, now. What story will I tell on my anniversary if I should finally outlast her with my own time in the City?

Though I suppose by that point, perhaps, I could always start retelling a few of my own, instead.

[OOC: And with August 2nd comes Rosella's Polyversary--today marks four years she's been in the City, and I am still baffled by it. Thank you all for all the wonderful years of gameplay, Polyites! I'm hoping for many more still to come. ♥]

Quest 309

Oh, dear, that's right, it is about that time again, isn't it? Of course, it's summer again, and it wouldn't be summertime in the City if we didn't have a blizzard sooner or later--just the same as how we always have those few days of hot weather right around Christmastime, too. Goodness, isn't it a good thing we're having it today, though, and not the other day when everyone was having their water fights? That certainly wouldn't be pleasant, running around throwing water all over each other when it's getting near freezing out.

Still, I've never seen one of these summer blizzards last for more than a few days, so if anyone is worrying about unpacking all their winter things for the long run, I'd say it's best to wait a bit and see if it clears up. It usually does, once we've had our chance to have our midsummer snowball fights and ice skating and all the other lovely things we do.

...Come to think of it, I suppose we ought to add another hot drink or two to the menu at the Blue Light, hadn't we? Perhaps we can come up with one, as a special for the time being.

In the meantime, though, I think I'd better go check on Ellington and the horses before the snow gets too terrible out. I think they've all been around long enough to be accustomed to these sudden snowfalls, too, but if there is a blizzard brewing, it's going to make getting around rather inconvenient and it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Goodness, how did it get to be the end of July already? Why, just next week it'll be...

Well. With any luck, the snow and ice will have cleared up before then. It'd really be a shame if I couldn't spend my City anniversary in--er, by the fountain, the way I always do.

No, I'm really very sorry, but I don't care if it's a curse, that doesn't mean I'm about to--

[More muffled chatter.]

--I will not turn around, and I'll not come out from behind the door, either! Oh, drat it all, where's that sign--

[And to the sound of another burst of chatter, the audio ends.

People passing by the Blue Light today, however, may notice a freshly-made sign prominently displayed in the window: NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO SERVICE.]

Quest 307

Oh, drat it all, I really do suppose I ought to have expected--of course, it is getting to be that time of the year again, isn't it? It was just the first day of summer last week, and it was winter the last time everyone came to call, and that's rather how these things go, once a season or so, without fail.

It's strange how some of the curses are like that, really. When one stays here long enough, one rather gets to know the patterns they follow--like the weekend of random curses once a month, and then this one cropping up a few times a year, and the mistletoe in December and October always being just awful and so on.

Oh, but that's quite enough of that; there's so much to do! The Blue Light will be open late tonight, for anyone to come and sit and have something to eat and visit awhile, so please do come by and say hello! That's where I'll be, and I'd certainly like to say hello to all of you.

And, er...

Well, please do try to, er, behave, won't you?

Quest 303

[Voice Post]

[The audio here starts out with somewhat of a long pause, as though the speaker switched on the recorder a little too soon, before she was really quite ready to start speaking. There isn't much background noise to fill in the gap, either; no footsteps, no sounds of nature crowding in. By and large, it's just...dead air. But then, carefully, a voice does speak: ]

I was...I'd planned to start this off with, um...with an apology, for the way I was behaving this past weekend, with the curse, and I really am very sorry for that, but it seems a bit...

[She trails off. Another long pause.]

It's just...I found out today that I'm to have the Blue Light now, and I thought that must be a mistake, because it belongs to--

[A pause again.]

But I'm glad, though! I'm glad, really, because--because they were all here for a while but he was always late, or a little behind, and then they all had to go and he was behind again and I--well, it was horrible, really, and he was so sad, and I worried so much for so long. So it's better that the time came for him to catch up again, isn't it? It's better, and...

[Another pause, and this time when her voice resumes, it's small, and more to herself than to the microphone.]

...and oh, it's--May the first, it's Lucy's birthday. I wonder if that means she got her wish? I'm sure that's what it would've been.

[The narration breaks here with some sniffling and shuddered breathing, accompanied by the rustle of fabric as she wipes her eyes on her sleeve.]

I've had to...say quite a few of these, you know, being here for so long and seeing so many people come and go and each time I get a little more practice at it, but it still never seems to come any easier, and...it's just, Edmund's...

[But she stops, because her voice cracks just a little, and it's small and almost pleading when it's finally heard again.]

Edmund, I don't know anything about managing a place like that, you awful--

[Silence. After a minute, she speaks one last time, and this time her composure is back.]

It's just, Edmund's gone home, and he's left me to look after his things, so if anyone could please--that is, I think I know most of you at the Blue Light already, just from visiting for so long, but it'd still be good for us to speak, I think, so if you could please get in touch with me I'd very much appreciate it. And if...anyone knows anything about where to start, in looking after a place like that, I'd very much appreciate the advice, too.

[And then the audio ends, while her voice is still strong, before it has the chance to crack again.]

[OOC: Bawww, Edmund. Another best friend gone from the City, and accordingly, Rosella is sad.

Blue Light People, I'll probably be posting a roundup to the tl;dr comm soon, and I'll link it here so I can get a headcount of you OOCly for my own reference! But feel free to reply here ICly, or we can just handwave that you did; either works for me.]

Quest 301

[Accidental Video | Open Action]

[As the video comes on, here is a Rosella on the steps of the Library with a broom in her hands and her braids dangling long down her back, sweeping the scattered pictures into piles so she can more easily get them cleaned up. Eagle-eyed viewers might be able to spot that she's got a few of them tucked away in one of her pockets (the ends just barely sticking out), but anyone who watches for more than a few seconds will observe that even though she's doing her best not to look at the photos she's sweeping, every so often one will catch her eye, and she'll bend down to retrieve it for a better look.]

Goodness, what a mess. Honestly, it's like autumn in the spring, but with falling pictures instead of leaves...

[She shakes her head, giving the pile she's sweeping a few last deliberate strokes to complete it.]

There. One more done. And that's one less pile that might go blowing all over the City with the next wind, then, anyway.

[She stops, tilts her head as she looks at one, and then reaches down for it, carefully brushing aside a few of the others to expose it completely.]

Is this--

[She lifts it up for a look, and her eyes proceed to widen slightly as she takes it in, unmoving as she regards it for a long, long time.

Long enough, in fact, for the video to end with a click.]

Quest 300

Private || Hackable by Friends )

[Filtered from Known DELILAH Members | Blue's Codes | Unhackable]

I'd rather not spoil a perfectly nice day by dwelling on an ugly one, but I will say that I'm certainly glad that curse we had yesterday is done and over with, and I certainly hope it's not one we see again anytime soon, and that's quite enough of that.

But it's lovely out today, and there's no curse, and it's the first day of spring! This is the fourth one to go past, now, since I came to the City; I remember it was just coming up on the first of spring back home in Daventry, too, before I left, but then when I came here it was August and I had to wait another whole seven months before the dates lined up the way they ought to. It's so strange to think that I was seventeen, then; an old friend of mine once told me that the first year here seems to take the longest, but then every other year after seems to fly past a bit quicker. She was right about that, I think. But then, she was usually right about most things.

She always knew when I was keeping secrets, that friend, and I usually do keep one around this time of year. You see, it's my brother's birthday today, the first of spring. And...we're twins, so that makes it my birthday, too. Though it's a bit strange to think of a pair of twins separated by four years in age, isn't it? Alexander's still seventeen, just as he's been four times around now, but today I'm turning twenty-one. It doesn't feel so different than twenty, really, and I'm glad for that. And for all of the friends I've made in all this time, too.

But speaking of friends, I have a promise to keep before the day is out, so I'd better not linger too much longer or I'll never make it! Happy first of spring, everyone! I hope it's as wonderful for you as it's always been for me.

[OOC: Yup, it's her birthday today--the fourth she's had in the City so far. WHEN DID SHE GET TO BE TWENTY-ONE. I AM NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS. And her 300th post, too! It's an exciting day. She's got a visit to make to Ellington before the day is out, but I know there were some Sekrit Party Planz™ in the works, so feel free to action her up, divert her, whatever! Quest 299

[Filtered from Known DELILAH Members | Blue's Codes | Unhackable]

My goodness, is it really March again already? With all that fuss over the desert and the glass and the waiting in lines for days on end, I must've completely lost track of the time!

Still, it seems as though that fuss is over with now, and the City is settling back into its routine again, just as it always does when things like this happen. It's odd, though; everyone knows how the City runs like a clock, with the Carousel and the numbered buildings and all that awful machinery in the heart of the Underground. But I almost rather wonder if sometimes it isn't a bit like an hourglass, too--running along normally for most of the time, but then with a great upheaval every so often as it turns itself over again. Goodness knows it'd certainly explain all the sand.

...Oh, and speaking of the sand, it's been just about a year since the tower by Building Three turned to sand and fell, isn't it? It seems as though sand keeps turning up again and again, lately--which rather makes me wonder if that mention of an hourglass is a bit more apt than I'd thought, even.

In any case, things do seem to be getting back to normal--or as normal as they're likely to get, in the City, and as we all saw for ourselves yesterday, even the curses are back to usual again. With any luck, things will stay quiet for a little while, at least. We've had some terrible curses in March before--the Ides of March in particular comes to mind--but after so much commotion last month, there's always the chance we may get lucky for a little longer. I certainly wouldn't mind having a nice, curse-free day for the first of spring.

My, and that's coming up quite fast now, too, isn't it? Goodness, it's only thirteen days now. As quickly as time has been slipping by lately, two weeks seems like almost nothing at all.

[OOC: Spoilers: the first of spring is also Rosella's birthday, and it's particularly special this year because she'll be twenty-one on the 21st. WHERE DID THE TIME GO?!]

Quest 298

[Accidental Voice Post]

Goodness, just look at it...it really is all of glass.

[There are very soft footsteps, faint and careful, like someone faced with the prospect of walking on eggshells and gingerly trying to keep them all from cracking as she goes.

(It's lucky she's a princess, really. If she can dance in shoes of glass, then she can certainly walk along a floor of it.)

But then there is rustling, too, like leaves, and the rhythmic sound of something falling may be too soft for all but the trained ear to hear--but it's there, keeping time, tink tink tink. Whatever could it be?]

Oh, drat, this again--?! Of all the times to--

[Evidently, Rosella knows.]

[OOC: Not five minutes back in the Glass City and already she's slapped with a curse. Such is Rosella's life. Quest 297

[And as the video comes up, here's Rosella, lightly dusted with sand and looking a bit sunburned as instant proof of her current location in the Desert City. She does, however, have her hair braided sensibly back, her sleeves rolled down, and a makeshift scarf wrapped around her neck and head to shade them from the sun, and in the hand not holding the Network device, it looks as though she's holding...a hand mirror?

The particularly eagle-eyed might notice that there seems to be a statue of some variety in the background of the shot, too--about a person's height and shape.]

It'd be a very good idea, I think, for anyone traveling in the desert to keep something that reflects on hand with them--a mirror, or a polished shield, or something of the like. And if you should think you see something in the distance, a figure of some sort walking your way...even if you're sure it's only a mirage, be certain to look away, and point the mirror at it, first.

[Her slightly chapped lips narrow into a thin line.]

It seems that on top of everything else, there are medusas out here. They're not quite so fearsome as some of the other monsters marauding about, really, but they're much more dangerous than one might think, especially if one underestimates them. So it's really only sensible to be careful.

[She sighs, rubbing her face with her sleeve.]

I do hope everyone is all right, though?

[OOC: Okay, so school sort of ate me alive this past week and I'm still a little behind on things, but here is a Rosella in the Desert City, apparently having a random encounter with the traditional King's Quest desert monster: a medusa. Team Sociopath, I'm assuming she's in your general vicinity at the moment? Or if you want to play it differently, ping me and I'll roll with pretty much anything. I, er...yes, hello again, everyone, it's so very nice to see you again! My, it's that time of the year again, isn't it? This must be our visit for the winter season, since the last one we had was, er, in the fall. It's, um, been quite some time since then, hasn't it?

...Yes, well, um. Yes. Er...

...Oh, honestly, this is ridiculous, I've never had such trouble with the visitors before--er, mostly, anyway, since there was that one time when--well, but that's beside the point. Um. It's just that there's someone here and I think he's been following me and I can't for the life of me puzzle out why, since every time I turn around he just up and disappears again! Honestly, I've never seen anything like it; normally the people who come to call are so eager to say hello. They don't usually sneak around in the shadows and turn up in nothing but glimpses wherever I go.

But, er, in any case, I am eager to say hello to people, and so please do stop by if you have a moment, since I'd like very much to visit with you if you have the time. And, er, I suppose if the person following me--or even if you aren't following me, but simply happening to turn up wherever I go on coincidence--can see this, too, then please do come out and say hello, yourself? I can't imagine why you wouldn't...

I'll be looking forward to it, very much so!

Quest 295

[Audio Post]

[The recording opens with the white noise of the City--the bustle of bodies, the shuffle of feet, the chatter of passerby--all oddly faint and removed from the microphone, as though recorded from a reasonable distance. A minute later, there comes a new sound, closer this time: a soft trill, a faint whistle, a rustle of feathers.]

My goodness, this isn't nearly so pleasant a curse in the middle of winter. It's much harder to fly, somehow, and the wind is so cold! Brrr. No wonder birds keep to their nests in weather like this.

[Another rustle of feathers; she seems to be adjusting them again and again, trying to find an arrangement that's comfortable--or perhaps, just making use of the movement to keep warm.]

And it's so hard to find an open window like this, as well! No one wants to let all the heat out by leaving one that way, of course. So first it's the trouble that one can't get out, and then it's the trouble that one can't get back in!

[Another high-pitched whistle.]

My, I do make a pretty sight against all the snow, though.

[She falls silent a minute, the background chatter returning to the forefront of the recording, and for a time it seems as though the message might be over, but then--]

Oh! There! Someone's opened the--oh, good, no, don't close, please, I want to come in too!

[And with an almost violent rustle of feathers, the audio ends with an abrupt click.]

[OOC: Yup, she's a Western Rosella again today, wings and feathers and all. And, evidently, not too fond about being out in the cold weather! She'll be responding via voice or video on the Network, but for anyone who wants Action, she's just managed to sneak into the Library as of the end of this post, and she'll be out and about again if you'd like to catch her around the City, too!]
